Reconstructing sedimentary processes in a Permian channel–lobe transition zone: an outcrop study in the Karoo Basin, South Africa

چکیده

Abstract Turbidity currents commonly bypass sediment in submarine channels on the continental slope, and deposit lobes farther down-dip flat unconfined abyssal plain. Seafloor outcrop data have shown that transition from to deposition usually occurs over complex zones referred as channel–lobe (CLTZs). Recognition of these cores remains challenging due a lack characteristic sedimentary facies structures. This paper focuses Unit E Permian Fort Brown Formation Karoo Basin, South Africa, Slagtersfontein complex, which has previously been interpreted CLTZ. study integrates thin-section micrographs, facies, bed-set stratigraphic architecture, palaeoflow directions achieve multiscale analysis CLTZ features. A novel process-based scheme is developed evaluate deposits terms depositional or erosional tendencies flows formed them. allows be distinguished by spatial distribution certain facies. Areas net were predominantly marked erosive larger variability direction while areas showed lower directions. Metre-scale structures bypass-dominated area reveal seafloor erosion scour formation. Field relations suggest presence ?500 m long mega-scour The documented here are applicable for identifying CLTZs sparse datasets such outcrops with limited palaeogeographical context obtained subsurface systems.

Sulfur geochemistry across a terrestrial Permian^Triassic boundary section in the Karoo Basin, South Africa

Concentrations of sulfur and carbon, and isotopic compositions of sulfur were determined in sedimentary rocks from a section across the terrestrial Permian^Triassic (P^Tr) boundary in the northern Karoo Basin, South Africa. High concentrations of sulfide produced by sulfate-reducing bacteria were found in the sedimentary rocks at and just below the perceived P^Tr boundary. The ratios of organic...

Modeling the Role of Primary Productivity Disruption in End- Permian Extinctions, Karoo Basin, South Africa

The end-Permian mass extinction is well-known as the most severe mass extinction of the Phanerozoic. Terrestrial communities appear to have been strongly affected by the event, but the cause of the extinction remains enigmatic. Here we explore whether primary producer disruption (e.g., extinction of terrestrial plants) could have led to a collapse of end-Permian terrestrial ecosystems, using mo...

Abrupt and gradual extinction among Late Permian land vertebrates in the Karoo basin, South Africa.

The Karoo basin of South Africa exposes a succession of Upper Permian to Lower Triassic terrestrial strata containing abundant terrestrial vertebrate fossils. Paleomagnetic/magnetostratigraphic and carbon-isotope data allow sections to be correlated across the basin. With this stratigraphy, the vertebrate fossil data show a gradual extinction in the Upper Permian punctuated by an enhanced extin...

Pre-drill Groundwater Geochemistry in the Karoo Basin, South Africa.

Enhanced production of unconventional hydrocarbons in the United States has driven interest in natural gas development globally, but simultaneously raised concerns regarding water quantity and quality impacts associated with hydrocarbon extraction. We conducted a pre-development assessment of groundwater geochemistry in the critically water-restricted Karoo Basin, South Africa. Twenty-two sprin...

A Review of Stratigraphic, Geochemical, and Paleontologic Data of the Terrestrial End-Permian Record in the Karoo Basin, South Africa

The Karoo Basin has long been considered to contain the type stratigraphic succession for the terrestrial expression of the end-Permian mass extinction. A detailed extinction model, based on biostratigraphic and geologic data, has proposed rapid environmental change that coincides with a vertebrate biozone boundary, which was postulated to have been caused by increased aridity. Our sedimentolog...
